Alan Billington taught English and became Head of that Department during
the middle and late 1960s. He went on to teach at the 6th Form College which
followed the Grammar School on the same site.
Alan retired to Hertfordshire but spent his final months in Berkshire where he
sadly died on 25th January 2018. He is
pictured here. (Back

Information from Alan’s daughter Julia
From Paul Cooper comes this little reminiscence of Alan Billington
Sad to hear Alan Billington passed away earlier this year. I think he taught me
English in my 2nd or 4th year (I had Spence in the 3rd I recall).
I remember Alan on his Lambretta scooter and one day in 1963 he drew up along
the railway line at Bramshot with one of his kids on the back (a daughter I think).
I was on the ‘illegal’ side of the railway fence taking photos of steam trains
and remember hoping he didn’t recognise me. Nothing was ever said.
Incidentally I had a book published this year on the 50th anniversary of the end
of Southern steam so those days on the lineside paid off eventually!
