master. If you look carefully you can see he is smoking a pipe ‘in public’ which is something I do
not believe was a frequent occurrence. The putrid stench which emanated from the Staff Room was
however a sign that the evil weed was very much in evidence away from prying eyes.
I was never taught by Mr. Miles, ‘Charlie’ Upton was my French teacher. I liked Charlie but I’m not
sure sure he liked me. I think he was surprised when I passed my French ‘O’ Level by a
comfortable margin.
‘Smiler’ Miles retired in 1962 after 36 years
of teaching at A.C.H.S. and F.G.S.
